The whole of Wales was filled with songs by Bonnie Tyler as thousands of fans gathered in Swansea on Monday to sing the songs that made her famous around the world as they bid farewell to the Welsh icon.
As Tyler’s coffin arrived at a church in Swansea Minster, the singer’s songs such as “It’s a Heartache” and “If I Sing You a Love Song” were played, with fans singing along to her greatest hits.
Later, a male voice choir gave a mournful rendition of “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” perhaps the song most closely associated with the singer’s unmistakable husky voice.
Wales bids farewell to a beloved icon
As fans said their goodbyes to Tyler, locals praised her as they said she never lost her connection to Wales despite her stardom.
“She is a Welsh icon,” said Bette Richards, a 75-year-old retiree who attended the funeral. “She was a beautiful person. She never changed.”
Another fan, John Edwards, 70, described the singer as an “ordinary person” despite her decades of global fame. “She was one of us. I feel proud … Everybody loves her. It is a big loss.”
At the funeral, her long-time tour manager Matt Davis remembered Tyler as a performer who could “command any stage” and who had lived a “big and well-lived life.”
Davis also described Tyler as humble, saying she was “always a star but never a diva.”
Roger Bell, the talent scout who discovered her and eventually became her friend, praised Tyler for not forgetting her roots.
“There was a warmth and sincerity about her that shone through, and she never said no to having a photo taken or giving an autograph to anyone who asked,” he told mourners.
From Wales to global stardom
Born as Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler grew up in a traditional coal-mining village northwest of Swansea.
In the 1970s, Tyler began her singing career with “Lost in France.” Her song “It’s a Heartache” became an international success, but it was “Total Eclipse of the Heart” that transformed her into a global star. The song reached number one in both Britain and the United States.
Since then, Tyler has never stopped creating songs and music that resonated with everyone.
Tyler’s final months and battle for recovery
Even at age 75, Tyler continued her musical career. Before her hospitalization in May 2026, Tyler was preparing for a European tour in Malta to mark 50 years since the release of “Lost in France.”
The singer was rushed to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, for emergency surgery to treat a perforated intestine. She was then placed in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit to aid her recovery.
On June 15, she regained consciousness but remained in critical condition and very unwell in the ICU. On July 8, Tyler unexpectedly passed away due to complications from her illness.
