Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19, 2026, and Rockstar Games has spent ten years building it.
Until now, the studio has shown almost nothing: two trailers in a decade, the most recent in May 2025, running two minutes and 47 seconds.
Silence has been the strategy.
That silence was meant to break on Rockstar’s terms. On August 27, Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premieres on Netflix at 3pm ET, moving to YouTube and Rockstar’s website for free six hours later.
Instead, since August 18, an anonymous group calling itself Cyberleek has been posting footage from an unfinished version of the game – driving, a robbery, a basketball minigame, and what it says is the full in-game map.
Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, moved fast.
It issued a copyright takedown to GitHub on August 19 and subpoenas the following day seeking to identify the accounts involved; a New York court granted one against Microsoft on August 21.
Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has commented publicly on the footage itself.
Silence a deliberate move
The silence is probably a deliberate move. Confirming the clips would validate the leaker, but denying them would mean disputing something people can already watch.
A build is a playable version made during development, it is a snapshot, not the finished product.
So even if the footage is genuine, and one clip suggests someone is actively playing rather than replaying old captures, it is not the game that ships in November. That may be why the date has not moved.
Cyberleek’s stated demands are not unreasonable: an end to digital preorders, and games that stay playable after publishers switch off their servers.
But it promotes its own cryptocurrency alongside every leak, and Stop Killing Games, the campaign that has argued this case for years, has rejected its methods.
Eight GTA 6 leaks in, nothing significant about the story has emerged, and Lucia, one of two protagonists, has not appeared at all.
Bloomberg has reported real anger inside the studio. This anger, though, does not represent a loss. Rockstar’s problem is that someone else chose when to reveal their secret.
