Book budgeting has become a major conversation on the reading app Fable.
Many users have grown tired of rushing through books. They want to keep up with the latest must-reads. However, this habit can also put pressure on their wallets.
“Readers are pushing back on haul culture and turning towards libraries, second-hand bookstores and subscriptions as deliberate alternatives,” Fable noted in its midyear findings report.
One Reddit user, who previously worked as a BookToker, said reading trends affected her buying habits. She eventually owned more than 2,000 books.
“I became caught up in new releases, decorative editions and advanced copies,” she said.
A slow reading movement
Readers have discussed ways to escape BookTok pressure for some time.
Earlier this year, the slow reading trend gained traction. The movement encourages smaller and more sustainable reading goals.
Instead of rushing through books, readers now focus on each story. Fable describes the trend as a response to social media’s focus on reading volume.
Romanticising a library card
Reader habits are also changing on BookTok. Trends such as Come to the library with me are becoming more popular.
One user wrote: “Reject BookTok culture, go to the library and get a weird little novel you’ve never heard of in your life and read it all in 2 days like God intended.”
Another user offered a simple reminder: “A gentle reminder that libraries do exist and you should use them.”
These creators highlight a cheaper way to discover books. Readers can visit their local library instead of spending money on books they may not enjoy.
However, many libraries face financial pressure. Some have already closed their doors.

Use it or lose it
Recent research from the University of Sheffield has raised concerns about England’s public libraries.
The study warns that library collections and budgets continue to shrink. Without government action, the decline could seriously affect communities that rely on these services.
Professor Briony Birdi, the lead researcher, said public libraries remain free and open to everyone. She also highlighted their importance to local communities.
The UK loses around 40 libraries each year, according to the BBC.
Deprived areas face an even greater risk. They are four times more likely to lose a publicly funded library.
Better Libraries also highlighted the wider role of libraries. The organisation said libraries provide connection, community and accessible support.
Reading should not be expensive
Many people assume that reading is an expensive hobby. Buying new books can certainly cost a lot.
However, reading itself does not have to be expensive.
Libraries and second-hand bookstores offer cheaper alternatives. They also help build communities and support more sustainable reading habits.
Readers can support these institutions by visiting them. A library card could be a better choice than another online book haul.
